Sculpture

Spent the last day of 2010 shooting some sculpture around the house, mostly rock, with a little bronze. If you are interested to see a bit more (including a couple of lighting setup images), please check out the gallery of 23 sculpture images on my website.

The first is "Mrs. Q", one of my grandmother's sculptures that she wouldn't elaborate on. One of my favorites, and the first one she gave me when I was a teenager.

One of my grandmother's other series, all analogies to the struggles that women suffered through the 60's and beyond:

Although this image has some issues I'm not fond of, it highlights the more tenuous side of the guilt metaphor.

A more revealing angle, showing the tenuous nature of guilt and internal struggle (one that I 'found' only after finishing with the piece and setting it in another room).

"Rowdy", one of Sandy's very first horses that we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy.

If you are interested in seeing more of Sandy's fantastic work, please go to sandygravesart.com and tell her I sent you!

1926 Gibson L-0 Acoustic Guitar

Some images of a vintage acoustic guitar, similar to one that delta bluesman Robert Johnson may have played (certainly was photographed with) prior to his untimely death at an early age. This is a set of more 'clinical' photographs detailing the depression-era craftsmanship of Gibson's relatively 'entry level' guitar.

The early L-0's amber brown finish on a flat spruce top, with maple sides.

Blue Canyon Grill

Here's an image from tonight, a local business here in Golden that my cycling team just garnered as a sponsor. It's a great place for team meetings, and the food is fantastic. You gotta try the nachos, the queso they use is out of this world!

Winter Dew Tour, SuperPipe Finals

Weather was just a tad different than on Thursday, and made for some difficult conditions in the pipe. The guys threw down despite the poor visibility, with Simon Dumont and Louie Vito taking the top spots for ski and snowboard. Here's a few from this chilly day, with a bigger set from three of the superpipe finals on the main website.

Winter Dew Tour, Men's Ski Superpipe Qualifier

The Winter Dew Tour continued today in Breckenridge with both practice and qualifying in Superpipe and Slopestyle. Breck's new 22' Superpipe is a monster, and the finals on Saturday should see some serious air being thrown around. Below are a few from today, and check my website if you want to see a few more from today's Men's Ski Superpipe Qualifier.

Tomkiewicz Holiday Card

The Tomkiewicz family also took the opportunity to help in the fundraising efforts of the Mitchell DC Trippers, and we headed downtown for an early evening shoot for their holiday card. Such a fun group, Dawn even offered to let me shoot Tom's moldy cat (I think?)! Add a couple of horses and a dog, and we'll have it covered...

Ross Family Portrait

The Ross Family took advantage of my recent Holiday Portrait incentive benefiting students going on Mitchell Elementary's Washington DC Trip, and met me at Clear Creek for an hour of shooting this evening. As we worked our way toward downtown we found some nice light as dusk neared, and were even rewarded with some holiday lights on Washington Ave. We had a great time, and as always (Taffy) the dog provided the entertainment for us all!

Poulos Family Portrait

Kelly's mom and sister joined us in downtown Golden this afternoon for a post-Thanksgiving family portrait. I can't exactly say that the weather cooperated, but we had fun and got some great images!

James Einolf's Gibson L-1 Replica

James Einolf is a luthier in Castle Rock, CO who specializes in making replicas of the depression-era Gibson L-0 and L-1 acoustic guitars (renowned bluesman Robert Johnson was once photographed holding one). Shown below is Guitar #51, x-brace construction with a Spruce top and Mahogany body. James is able to handcraft approximately 12 guitars a year, and over the years has created quite the capable woodworking shop. You can find more about James and his guitars at www.JamesEinolf.com, and you can see more images here: http://jeffwarnerphoto.com/site/Einolf_L-1/index.html.

The Beierle Family Portrait

Tate's soccer teammate Joey brought his family down to Clear Creek on this chilly fall morning for a family portrait. The inclusion of the family dog made it entertaining as usual, especially when a piece of ice floated into the little eddy near where we were shooting. You'd have thought it was some kind of small rodent! Anyway, here is one of the select images:

The Baird Family Portrait

The Bairds joined Reade and I down at Clear Creek today for their family portrait; such a beautiful day for November! The kids were great, and happily got through nearly an hour of walking around to a few different locations. As always, the creek was a big hit for both tromping and rock throwing. Here's my favorite from the set:

Three lights, three subjects!

Please disregard the demeanor of the rather unwilling subjects for these lighting tests, I'm simply trying to get multiple off-camera flashes dialed in with various diffusing techniques. It's a lot more difficult without modeling lights, and visualizing where the lights is going to go with reflectors is difficult at best. We'll try again sometime...

Saturday morning soccer

The Kickers played a great game this afternoon, to this goalie's chagrin:

Friday Night Lights

Shot some football tonight at NAAC stadium where Arvada West topped Boulder 21-13, while Golden suffered a frustrating inability to move the ball against Dakota Ridge and lost 33-7. Here's a few images...
